Born to a pediatrician and lawyer, Godfrey was brought up in a home that was strict about academic success. Being second born didn't spare him from his parents urging him to do well in school. Anything less than the best possible grade was always frowned upon, but the sighs of disappointment were always accompanied by motivating comments ("You can do better than this, you're more than capable of it.") and sessions seated at the kitchen table with either his mother or father going over his mistakes, working through step-by-step until there were no further errors. This of course was not only exclusive to him, the same courtesy extended to his sister. Luckily enough, he was the youngest of two siblings and had someone to go to for help when parents were absent.

It wasn't long until Godfrey was able to offer help to his sibling as well, she excelling in subjects he had some struggles in and vice versa. Together they were always able to pull through any issues when their parents were too busy to assist. The gap of eight years never seemed an issue, both always getting along well. The complaints of classmates regarding their siblings was never something he could relate to, instead he only had good things to say about his sister. An older sibling he could look up without feelings of rivalry.

His life was smooth sailing up to the point of entering his freshman year in high school. It was as quiet a night as any of he others, nothing foreboding, at least that he could recall, that would give a hint of what was to come. He'd been up late, just as every other night, reading two or three chapters ahead of his assignment for the next day. His parents had already stopped by to wish him a good night, his sister signed off for the night as well. It was about an hour or so after he'd managed to turn off the light that a loud crash coming from downstairs had managed to wake him. A crash that was followed by a loud bang and a scream that sounded muffled. Still hazy from sleep, he wasn't entirely sure what he'd heard, dragging himself out of bed and out his bedroom door to investigate what had happened. What he hadn't expected to see what he reached the small platform that separated the flight of stairs was his father on the floor in a pool of his own blood.

Looking around, all he remembers taking in is the shock on his mother's face and the masked assailant, before his eyes landed on his father once more and everything went black.

The security company had called for the police as soon as they could, but it hadn't been soon enough. His father was pronounced dead at the scene. Whatever else had happened Godfrey wasn't sure, the incident never something his mother expanded on, neither to him or his sister upon her arrival from school.

Neither attended school for two weeks following the death of their father, a palpable gloom settling over the whole household until their mother managed to break it. She wouldn't allow their lives to be placed on hold despite the tragedy.

It turned out easier to return to school than Godfrey had thought. Being idle at home made it easier to focus on the loss. School offered enough of a distraction to keep mind on other things, as long as he ignored the concerned stares from teachers and classmates. Despite the distraction that studies provided, coming home was still hard. He still expected the table to be set for three, rather than just two. Sometimes it wasn't even set at all. Although his mother's salary was enough for them to get by without the added income his father had provided, Godfrey suspected the extra hours were put in to offer her distraction from the tragedy as well.

Even though things went on as they always had, there was always an emptiness that seemed impossible to rid of. He wondered if his sister struggled with the same feelings or if it was easier on her - after all, she'd become accustomed to expect the company of her roommate rather than her family. However, it was never anything he asked about. There was no need to inspire the same feelings if she was managing to cope better.

His grades never suffered, especially with the ongoing insistence for his mother that he complete everything on time and the accompanying nag that the quality of his work mattered as well. Homework wasn't enough of a distraction though, especially on nights when his mother wouldn't make it home past her usual hours.

With time to kill on his own, he looked into activities to engage in after school. Judo managed to catch his interest, not only because it passed the time, but it offered a skill that could possibly prevent another similar tragedy, or at the very least offer a possibility that he'd be less helpless if such a situation occurred again. When the idea was brought up to his mother, she was more than supportive. Once classes begun there were no more nights home alone, but it meant spending more hours awake at night to study.

The prolonged time studying wasn't a bother however. After the incident the dark unsettled him to the point that he couldn't sleep in a dark room. The longer a bright light could be on, the better. When that wasn't an option a nightlight would have to do. His mother had become aware of this newly acquired phobia, setting out to buy nightlights to scatter through the house to make his treks to and from his room at night that much easier. Although she was aware of the fear, it wasn't something they spoke about.

As his high school years came to a close and he'd managed to reach the rank of first dan, things seemed to reach a normalcy he hadn't ever expected to be reached after the loss of his father.

His sister had already graduated university and moved overseas to France. With his mother's blessing, after graduation he was to move to France with his sister for a year.

The year went by much more quickly than he expected, finding himself saying goodbye to his sister and France much too soon. With the promises of keeping in touch (not that there was any doubt they would) he returned to Canada to begin his studies, months away from the age of 20.

School, judo and work combined took a lot of energy. His mother remained supportive through it all, even suggesting he quit his job and focus on school and judo, rather than adding the extra stress. However, despite not having a necessity to work, he refused to quit, enjoying the experiences with people he managed to gain through simple work at a cafe. After getting through it his first year, there was no reason for him to doubt he'd be able to juggle all three.

As busy as he was, his time in school passed by quickly enough. Eventually he did quit the part time job at the cafe he'd acquired, substituting it instead with internship opportunities. Such experience offered him a foot through the door to move on to bigger and better things.

Eventually he was able to begin his own practice, focusing on couples counseling. Two years into his own practice he was told of a job opening by a friend he'd made in grad school. The catch, was that it was overseas, in Korea. If his sister could do it, he didn't see why he couldn't manage as well. With his mother's encouragement, he flew out for the interview, managing to nab the job on the spot.

The new opportunity found his bags packed and documents ready to settle in a new country. The goodbye was tearful, on both his mother's and his behalf, but the promises of visits eased the bittersweet pain that came with bidding adieu.

It was easy enough to settle into his new job, teaching a Abnormal Psychology class at Sungkyunkwan University. Two years later he found himself founding his own practice once more on top of teaching another course, Sociology of Human Sexuality. With his grasp of the language improving and finding stability in his work and personal life (managing to sustain his hobby of practicing judo as well) things seemed to be going pretty great.

What he hadn't expected though was to find a community of individuals just like him. Differing from him in so many ways, yet sharing similarities he never thought he would share with anyone else.

As embodiment of the night Godfrey is able to control it to some extent as well as aspects that come along with the nighttime. He's able to manipulate its length, however he is unable to control the time. Apart from manipulating the length of a night, he's able to bring it about when the sun is still out. However, the latter is an ability he's still not fully comfortable with, being unable to bring about the night without great amounts of effort and only to smaller areas.

Apart from causing nighttime and controlling its length, he's gifted with certain abilities to manipulate darkness and shadows. Through shadows he is able to teleport short distances as well as camouflage in them, making it possible for him to become undetectable while in the dark or any shadowed area. If there is light present he's able to cloud small areas in darkness to allow him to make use of his stealth abilities. Using shadows and darkness to his advantage is made easier by his ability to see well in low light or total darkness.

Stealth is not the only advantage darkness offers. His abilities go farther than merely generating it, able to condense it into a solid form and turn it into any tangible object he wishes. For now he hasn't experimented with much other than simple shapes or fashioning it into weapons, most notably daggers.

His affinity for the dark brings about a dislike for brightly lit places. Godfrey's eyesight suffers in bright light, his eyes too sensitive to put up with it for too long. Sunlight is also something he's incredibly sensitive to, being out for prolonged periods of time, especially in the summer, irritates his skin, ranging from rashes to sunburns. Although he can still function during the daytime, his energy peaks as soon as the sun goes down.

Being that the stars and moon are also aspects of the night, he has some control over them as well, however it's extremely limited - only able to slightly move their positions in the night sky and nothing else.
